In a stunning announcement, U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson is leaving he job in MO-8 to take a position with the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.
Emerson, a Republican, is considered one of the more moderate members of the House. In fact, according to one recent vote survey, she ranked precisely in the middle of the members of the House.
"Our district has earned its reputation for commonsense above all else, and I will leave Congress in February with a heavy heart despite my confidence that southern Missouri and its standard for leadership will endure," her statement said.
It's also surprising because a special election will be needed to replace her. Had she announced this year, the regular election could have found her replacement.
More as we get it.
