The Federal Election Commission has written a letter to the Todd Akin campaign, asking for a clarification of $27,000 in donations the congressman's campaign received in February and March this year.
The FEC says the contributions may have come directly from corporations. That's illegal, although corporations can set up separate committees that can give to a campaign.
Most of the donations came from limited liability corporations, or LLCs. Donations from LLCs are permissible as long as they're partnerships -- and the FEC says it wants to make sure that's true.
The donations total $27,150. The FEC asks the campaign to either refund the donations or explain their origin by Nov. 20.
(Earlier report of $26,920 in questioned donations was incorrect.)
